serve and croquet

helped clean up the Oshun Women's Center and then off to Pat's croquet in the hamptons and unlimited mexican food birthday slosh fest.
Finally watched Objectified (a documentary on Industrial Design. Made by the same guy who did Helvetica.) A great movie which pretty much encapsulates the nuances of this field, providing vast insight from various (famous) ID professionals in the world. It highlighted the brief history of ID, the current state of products in our society, and how it should/how it could be in the future. Insights were delightful, inspirational, and critical. I'm inspired and i'm sure if anyone else saw this they'd be intrigued in some form or fashion, no pun intended.)
topped it off with some Swig and Osha at 3am. swell.

Obama for a "healthier" US

this saturday the 27th is National Health Care Day of Service. do something about it.
Jen originally told me about this but just recalled it bc of tonight's ABC special forum with Pres. Obama regarding his plan for health care.
btw, thanks roger for dropping some knowledge on this subject for me. of course you'd know this stuff!

anyway, interesting tidbit of information i learned tonight:

The USA spends the most on healthcare vs any other country, yet ranks 36th in the world in healthcare performance.

Well, I'm hoping his plan to improve the administration of technology and to improve preventative care in the health care industry will help change this stat.

proud of you Ilija

my boy ilija (ill-i-ya) (soft "i" for the second "i") just got the summer internship at Specialized! dude, can i get a bike? jk
so we celebrated a little sat night, checked out mezzanine where they were hosting a huge artist/designer/craft party and supported his coworker who was one of the three live painters on hand.
oh and did i mention already that the Lakers won the championship on sunday?
i started the summer semester today. it's time to get-a-crackin. type forms and materials/processes- no joke. and im back at timbuk2 for a little on-call action. and can't forget volleyball. yeah, hands full. it's okay, i still have time to eat.
speaking of eating, i made a commitment earlier tonight to finish the 1/4 bag that was remaining of my doritos. why, why.

(not ilija's coworker) but ian ross. good colors.

as the crowd goes, 'aww'

happy birthday dadster

don't look back -boston

happy birthday dad! i have a gift for you... it's coming next week. it's another Lakers championship.
(i nearly wept as i was reading the various greeting cards in walgreens when i was picking out birthday cards for my parents. i really would've liked to have made my own cards for them but i ran out of time. plus, the sayings in the cards were golden.)

i'm not fazed by last night's loss. like ESPN said, the lakers didn't lose, the magic won. both teams played well, but the magic played better.

Volleyball league started up again yesterday and i'm happy for that. i need to keep bouncin. we have a revamped team too. we're actually pretty dope now. hahahah watch out other teams.

vince thomas says, "shut up!".

together forever -shai

Vince Thomas writes about Kobe's recent 'public repossession' of his rings and the questioning of his legacy. well, his recent nba.com article ought to drill some correct perspective on the whole debate. He writes for SLAM, NBA.com, and ESPN.

this is just an excerpt:

He went on to say that Shaq couldn't have won those three rings without him. And, further, THEY (Shaq and Kobe) couldn't have won those rings without Phil Jackson and Derek Fisher and (hellooooooooo) Big Shot Rob Horry. Kobe seemed irritated, peeved and angry that, for the past five years, his three rings have been publicly repossessed and -- legacy wise -- stuffed in Shaq's trunk. Well, get angry Kobe, 'cause you're right, that whole notion is backward.

How about we start saying saying Shaq's rings are Kobe's rings? Ridiculous, right? The most accurate assessment of that three-year dynasty is that those three years of dominance were a Shaq AND Kobe thing.

stupid hennessey, stupid courtney lee (phew)

arya left, darryll right. enjoying the swensens.

d's sweet suite. goodness.

the noon after. telescopin the bridge.

a nice reason to work for an automotive company

dontchange -musiq

damn, what a game 2. courtney lee could've been the hero but no, he decided to choke. phew.
last night was pretty fun. first started out meeting up darryll, nicole, and arya for dinner at one of my favorite chinese restaurants in the city, Tai Chi. after, hit up swensen's in snob hill. thata serve you right. then went back to D's shnazzy hotel the argonaut in fisherman's wharf. his room/suite looked like a loft out of a magazine.
shirley met us up, then we hit the cellar where jeff was spinning the good tunes. sure does know how to keep the people moving. the south bay crew came up too so that was fun to hang with them again. ran into elayne (for the second time within two months at a club. speaking of small world, ran into dario on polk on friday.). we all decided to keep the party rockin at d's spot. rochelle (sp?), court's lady, had the novel notion of getting a large bottle of hennessey, which she had to convince the store owner to sell to us, which turned into a "why didn't i think this was going to be a bad idea" situation today.
i ended up hanging-over at the room and went straight to Hayward at D's Godsister's house for the lakers game/bbq. so funny. everytime fish would take it to the hole we'd all interject with anxiety hahaha. game 2, history. let's get em in orlando.

such is life...

selfish -slum village

excerpt from core77.com. hiring and turnover insight.
-------

The first of our four panelists to get the Two Questions treatment this time around is Chelsea Vandiver, who heads up the Communications Design Group at Portland-based, internationally focused, multi-disciplinary design studio Ziba. In an industry known for instability and frequent shifts of locale and title, Chelsea has managed to stick with the award-winning consultancy for a decade now, creating print, web and environments for clients as diverse as P&G, Nike and FedEx, and building an innovative, flexible 12-person design team in the process.

1. A lot of effort is made by many studios to retain good designers, but you've mentioned it's sometimes advantageous to let a restless employee move on, knowing they may return further down the line. When is this a good idea, and why?
Working at a design studio is not that different from being in a relationship. Commitment is essential to producing great work. The designer and employer must meet each other's needs in order for it to work. Every design studio has a unique culture and body of work, just like every designer has a unique personality and style. We're all looking for the perfect match. When things don't work out, it's important to not take it personally. The chemistry just didn't work, and chemistry is essential to the creative process.
I view turnover in the creative industry as normal and essential to the growth of the designers and the design studios. The circulation of design talent in Portland makes our design community tighter, our work better and keeps our creatives happy.

2. Ziba got its start as an Industrial Design consultancy, but has since expanded into a number of other, related fields. As head of the Communications Design group, how do you convince applicants that their work will be valued as much as at a straight-up graphic design studio?
I don't. Truth be told, work will not be put on a pedestal here. Designers who come to Ziba, come for collaboration. Their work is one piece in a larger puzzle. We are offering them the opportunity to be part of something bigger.
Honesty is crucial in an interview for both parties. If I set false expectations, I will be setting the designer up for failure and disappointment.

nascar racing, carnival style bball booths, free liks, free buffet/ice cream/candy, caricature artists (i ended up looking like barack obama's younger brother), wii (me losing to roger equalled downing beers), and some nice aussies.
