part III... to the future we enter with confidence

one speech after another, inspires more and more than the last, the hope for what America is supposed to be, the future is now... with Obama.
I'm a sap i know, but it's not the reason why i got so teary eyed listening to the various witnesses speaking to what Obama can do for our great country... what WE can do.
It's so empowering this DNC! i love it. "8 is enough!"

and i like what delegate barney smith said, "we need a president who puts barney smith first, not smith barney."

part II, hillary clinton

her DNC 08 speech... well done. another inspiring expression of what America is and should be about.
"...keep going!" - Harriet Tubman

part 1, the spirit of america now and forever...

a great speech by michelle obama on august 25th, 2008 at the DNC that reflects the spirit of hope for what America was originally set out to be. heck, the spirit of humanity! the last 2 mins. were cute too. haha

Radiohead concert cost = a mile bike ride

this past weekend was the big music festival called OutsideLands in Golden Gate park. you know, like coachella. Tickets were about 85 bucks a day. I ain't paying that if I only like some of the bands. anyway, radiohead was the headliner for friday night. i had nothing to do at 8pm so i rode my bike there hoping I'd be able to watch/hear them for free around the perimeter of the polo field in which they were performing on. and yes, i totally got a free show of radiohead! and i wasn't the only one enjoying such an opportunity....

Football season... can you hear it?

brake vs no brake on fixies...

I overheard these guys while they were hovering over my bike discussing "no brakes- why, what's the point of that?"
before i go on, just to let the reader know I do have a front brake. they were i suppose sparked the notion of the contrary.
ok, so why do many fixed gear riders ride without a brake? Simple- because they're too cool for school:) But for a more profound answer, it's because fixed gear bikes are originally track bikes. and of course, in track cycling you don't utilize brakes; you're racing in a contained oval track. However, on the road which is a world full of obstacles, terrain, grades (inclines/declines), etc. safety is a priority. (unless, you can honestly tell me you don't ride among cars at full speed down hills and shit, then fine i'll ride brakeless too.)
i know, preserving the original aesthetic of a track bike is beautiful aka "clean", but it only makes sense if you're preserving its original purpose as well.
good example- it's silly don't you think when you see fast and furious spoilers on import cars on the street? it's not like you're driving that fast you need to keep the drag low on the rear of your car as if you're racing Indy.

Dwell Mag. - Business of Design

in interior architecture/product design that is. Three great insightful panelists who run their own companies from a kitchen designer, to a bath products/interior company, and a furniture designer.
Some things taken from the evening- design sensibility (thanks mike/CCA), with more constraints the smarter you will be as a designer- limited resources, customer nuances, etc., if you are adamant about an idea and a customer may not agree initially don't give up on it- try to justify your idea and it might change the mind of the customer, why is CCA better than AAU (if it is?), free drinks...

and this thing was held at SFMOMA... love it!

Volleyball

Sunday I played in my first volleyball tournament in SF. Co-ed doubles on grass. All the way down at Stanford. Although we didn't make it past the first round of playoffs, it was hella fun. I also learned a couple things: Don't be scared to hit the ball and don't be scared to wear sunblock.
Next Sunday, Co-ed quads. can't wait!

the same beauty of old and new

it's great capturing the essence of a brand's design that transcends time in a coincidental situation. i see the vintage mercedes on one street corner. then, a couple blocks later, the new CL. the beauty exists then and now, in the old and the new today. mercedes... of course, the standard's been set.

stupid toe clips

i f-in fell over THREE times today while coming to a stop on my bike. yes, that's right... i fell to the ground THREE times while my right foot was still stuck in my toe harness. the worst was the third time- i fell at the cross walk on market/duboce at rush hour. slick me pretended it didnt even happen and rode off into the sunset. um yeah, the pretentiousness (word?) was so fake.

side note- mia c. villanueva is a great photographer... some examples above
